Video: Mitch McConnell’s Last Stand?

MSNBC’s Lawrence O’Donnell outlines why Mitch McConnell might not want to run for re-election to the Senate including how jealous he must be of Paul Ryan.

Why would Mitch McConnell want to run for reelection, especially when Kentucky has no gratitude for the job that he’s been doing in the Senate? Polling shows that Mitch McConnell has a 33 percent approval rating in Kentucky. Sixty-one percent of Kentucky voters say Mitch McConnell has been there too long and it’s time for someone new.

Kentucky is done with Mitch McConnell if Democrats can find the right candidate to run against him. Like possibly Amy McGrath, who lost a close election for a Kentucky House seat last year.

Campaign to Draft Democratic Challenger to McConnell Starts Raising Funds

The Ditch Mitch Fund, a political action group, announced Monday it’s creating a “Draft Amy” website to inspire the former Marine to enter next year’s contest against Senator Mitch McConnell.

This comes weeks after reports surfaced that McGrath, who lost her Kentucky congressional bid last fall, is being courted by top Democrats including Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer of New York, to run against Kentucky’s top Republican.

In addition to the website and digital ads, Ditch Mitch Fund is pledging that any money it raises will be immediately transferred to McGrath’s future campaign if she decides to run.

“Our mission is to hold Mitch McConnell accountable,” Ryan Aquilina, the group’s executive director, told the Courier Journal on Monday. “And part of this campaign we’re doing is to show her and everyone else that grassroots Democrats are going to be there for her; we’re going to show up and raise money.”

Senators Enzi and Roberts Want To Tax Electric Vehicles

Last Month, Republican Senators Pat Roberts (R-Kansas), Mike Enzi (R-Wyoming) and John Barrasso (R-Wyoming) introduced a bill to end the federal tax credit for EV purchases, and replace it with a new annual tax on EV owners.

Why would Republicans, who are supposed to be against taxes, want to do this? Here’s a possible clue: campaign finance watchdog OpenSecrets, has found that the Oil and Gas sector is a top financial contributor to all three senators.

Senators Ernst & Lee Unveil “Paid Family Leave” — That’s Not Actually Paid Leave

GOP senators are finally grasping the notion that the US is the only industrialized nation to not offer paid family leave. Their latest proposal, the “Cradle Act” rolled out today by Senators Joni Ernst and Mike Lee, enables new parents to take paid time off after the birth or adoption of a child. But the proposed program taps into those parents’ Social Security savings–meaning a forced delay to their retirement.

Sen. Ernst Says She Could Have Been Trump’s VP

According to Iowa Senator Joni Ernst in an affidavit filed as part of her divorce proceeding last October, the only reason she wasn’t Trump’s running mate in 2016 is because her then-husband didn’t want her to.

The filing was made in October but unsealed this month after Ernst and her former husband, Gail Ernst, settled their previously contentious divorce.

Ernst wrote that after Trump interviewed her in July 2016 to be his running mate, “I turned Candidate Trump down, knowing it wasn’t the right thing for me or my family.” She says it was a sacrifice she made for her husband, who wasn’t fond of her political career.

McConnell Preps Another Nuclear Option to Speed Trump Judges

President Donald Trump’s stream of judges is about to become a torrent.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and his GOP caucus have long prioritized confirming conservative judges to lifetime appointments. But they’re about to dramatically accelerate their ability to unilaterally approve as many nominees as possible, stack the federal court system with conservatives, and leave few open seats for any future Democratic president.

In just 2 years McConnell and senate Republicans have confirmed enough Trump judicial nominees to fill 20 percent of all Circuit Court seats in the country. But this record pace isn’t good enough for McConnell. He’s now preparing to pull the trigger on the “nuclear option” and change Senate rules once again with a simple majority to allow much quicker confirmation of lower court judges in the coming months.

John Cornyn Raising Money For “STOP BETO FUND”

Democrat Beto O’Rourke has already said he’s not running for the U.S. Senate in 2020.

Cornyn, nonetheless, is evoking O’Rourke’s name to energize Republicans into giving money, perhaps to build up his campaign war chest for any other Democrat who may announce a bid against him. And his messaging is drenched in fear:

“As speculation grows around Beto O’Rourke’s political future, I want to set one thing straight: ‘Beto’s Texas’ would be unsafe, it’d be unsuccessful, and it’d be downright dangerous. So, to make sure his extreme liberal plans never see the light of day in Texas, we set up the STOP BETO FUND. It’s critical that you do what you can, as soon as possible, to stop him. We can’t waste any time.”

Senate Confirms Anti-LGBTQ Judge

The Senate voted Tuesday to confirm a 37-year-old Washington lawyer whose nomination drew vociferous opposition from LGBTQ and some civil rights groups, to a lifetime appointment on a federal appeals court.

Allison Rushing, partner at Williams and Connolly who President Donald Trump nominated in August, was confirmed to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit by a vote that split evenly down party lines.

“I want to thank my Senate colleagues for voting to confirm Allison Jones Rushing to be a U.S. Circuit Court Judge for the Fourth Circuit. I’ve had the opportunity to get to know her through the nomination process and I know she’s going to do a great job.”

Senator Thom Tillis (R-NC)

Republicans just advanced the judicial nomination of 36 year-old Allison Jones Rushing for the 4th Circuit (NC). She has practiced law for just 9 years, only tried 4 cases to verdict or judgment in her career (none as lead counsel), and isn’t even a member of the NC bar.

Senator Dick Durbin (D-IL)

“In their quest to remake the federal courts, Republicans rushed to confirm an inexperienced ideologue to a lifetime appointment in North Carolina despite her never having practiced there. Rushing has denounced marriage equality, opposed remedies for discriminatory lending practices, and rejected efforts to end housing discrimination against domestic and sexual violence survivors. Her record clearly shows she will not be a fair and independent judge – a reality with dire consequences for Fourth Circuit cases and the American people.”

Senate Republicans Refuse to Probe Trump Role in Hush-Money Payments

GOP leaders and key committee chairmen are making it clear they believe there’s no reason to look into whether the President broke the law in engaging in a scheme to hide payments made to two women to keep their stories quiet in the days running up to the 2016 elections.

Despite compelling testimony by Trump’s former personal lawyer Michael Cohen to the House Government Oversight committee — and physical evidence, including a check signed by the president while in office — Republicans in the Senate have decided there’s no reason to look into it any further.

John Cornyn, the Texas senator up for reelection in 2020, says Democrats are overreaching and setting the stage for impeachment.

“I think what the Democrats are worried about now is the hysteria over the alleged collusion, that they’re worried the Mueller report will come up with basically nothing against the President. That’s why I think their full-frontal assault, which as I said I think is a prelude to impeachment and will make sure that we can’t get anything else done.”

Texas Sen. John Cornyn, member of the Senate Judiciary Committee and adviser to GOP leadership.

Senator Lindsey Graham, meanwhile, admits out loud he plans to use the Senate Judiciary Committee to investigate “abuse” under the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act, continuing the GOP-led House probes from the last Congress into accusations of FBI and Justice Department misconduct.

Sen. Collins’ Legacy, And Reelection, May Be Tied To Kavanaugh

The Supreme Court temporarily blocked Louisiana from implementing the same type of abortion provider restrictions that were struck down in Texas in 2016. But president Trump’s latest addition to the bench, Justice Brett Kavanaugh, wrote a dissent explaining how he would have preferred to let the law take effect and revisit the issue after the law had a chance to shut down most of the state’s clinics.

So it’s no surprise public attention returned to Sen. Susan Collins (R-ME), who cast the deciding vote to confirm Kavanaugh after a long-winded Senate speech saying she did not believe the allegations of sexual assault against him and did not believe he would undermine Roe v. Wade. Despite Kavanaugh’s actions last week, Collins stands by her decision, with her office dismissively telling the Associated Press her critics didn’t read the opinion. But at least one legal expert has outlined how Kavanaugh’s dissent provides a roadmap to dismantle abortion rights with a trickle of dry, procedural rulings.
